Description

This underrated cactus is switched between Notocactus and Parodia, but is one of the finest representatives of either genus. The plant stays compact, with new growth that emerges a glaucous blue, stressing to an attractive greenish-yellow with intense sun or drought. Notocactus buinningii is surprisingly capable of handling both given its relatively tropical origin of the Brazil-Uruguay border. Photos of this species in nature show mature plants clinging to tight fissures in rocks, but still surrounded by dense grasses. Regardless, it is a fairly forgiving species and requires no more water than species from regions where it rains a few times a year. The floral display of this species is especially striking, with large yellow blooms that exceed the size of the plant.
