The leaves are highly variable in shape, ranging from triangular and arrow-shaped (sagittate) to spear-shaped (hastate), and can be either peltate (with the petiole attached away from the leaf margin) or non-peltate. A distinguishing characteristic of A. heterophylla is the presence of prominent submarginal veins that run parallel to and set slightly inward from the leaf margins.

In its natural habitat, Alocasia heterophylla thrives in limestone-rich areas near beaches, at elevations ranging from 29 to 300 meters above sea level. The climate in these regions is tropical and humid, with temperatures typically ranging between 9°C (48°F) and 31°C (88°F) and humidity levels between 60% and 70%. The area experiences a rainy season from October to May and a dry season from June to October, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 1,200 mm.

Several cultivars and closely related species are associated with Alocasia heterophylla. One notable cultivar is Alocasia heterophylla ‘Dragon’s Breath’, which is prized for its elongated, silvery-blue leaves with dark green veins, giving it a striking appearance. Another is Alocasia ‘Corazon’, also known as Alocasia Corazon Aquino, featuring thick, silvery-green leaves that can grow quite long under optimal conditions. It’s important to note that ‘Corazon’ is considered by some experts to be a distinct species rather than a cultivar of A. heterophylla, based on differences in their inflorescences.

When cultivating Alocasia heterophylla or its variants as houseplants, it’s essential to replicate their natural tropical environment to ensure healthy growth. These plants prefer bright, indirect light and thrive in high humidity conditions. The soil should be kept consistently moist but well-draining to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
